Don’t like it? Throw it out.
Picture this: an Albertan farmer grows barley, it gets sent to your favorite Albertan brewery, and they use it to make your favorite Albertan beer. At this point the grain typically gets thrown out, ending in a landfill. Our mission is to keep the good vibes going - coasters, plates, and takeout containers can be made from spent grain. All it takes is a bit of heat, hemp fiber, and all-natural binding agents.
Most non-plastic “compostable” materials won’t even decompose without advanced industrial composting facilities. With Bio6, Alberta’s ecosystem doesn’t need to be burdened with single-use items that won’t break down - when you’re done using a Bio6 item, throw it in your back yard and tell your garden to thank you later.
Grains, not stains.
Our coasters are ready to revolutionize the way you have a good time.
Supporting local, always
Bio6 coasters don’t just help our environment, they help our community. We’re partnering with Sea Change, Bent Stick, Omen Brewing, and Ale Architect to ease the burden of their waste disposal needs, and create something useful at the same time.
We’ve also partnered with Natural Fibre Technologies, an Edmonton-based biomass processing company, to bring byproduct hemp fibres into the mix. That’s double the waste averted, so you can feel twice as good about every sip.
Common sense composting
Our coasters are made from 100% compostable materials, and don’t need any special equipment or chemicals to break down. We toast and pulverize the spent grain, mix it with water, corn starch, hemp fiber, and vegetable glycerin. Then we literally throw it in a tee shirt press until it’s ready to roll.
Just toss your coaster in the dirt whenever you’re tired of it and let it break down naturally. The nutrients from the grain will enrich your soil and keep your plants happy.
Made right in your back yard
Bio6 is founded and entirely operated by University of Alberta student volunteers. So when you use a coaster, you know you’re supporting the efforts of local students. We take the odd weekend off to mix and press these coasters by hand, so you can rest assured there’s no carbon-intensive manufacturing or outsourcing going on behind the scenes.
